Cleaning and Lubrication of Handpieces ~ When
these steps are followed they can lengthen the life of your handpieces
and reduce repair costs. Follow these steps for proper handpiece
preparation for sterilization and lubrication:
-
Clean external surfaces of the
handpiece.
-
Insert bur into chuck of
handpiece.
-
To clean the internal surface of
the handpiece, introduce a lubricant/cleaner in the drive air tube.
(See diagram for location of drive air tube)
-
Rotate bur back and forth using
your thumb and forefinger to loosen any debris inside the head of
the handpiece.
-
Attach the handpiece to a Purge
Unit or handpiece connector, then cover the head of the handpiece
with a clean paper towel cupped in the opposite hand. run for
a minimum of 20 seconds to allow the oil to be expelled onto the
paper towel. Note: Oil should be as clean and clear as
if it were introduced directly from the lubricant/cleaner container.
If discolored, repeat steps 3, 4, and 5 until the oil that is
expelled is clear.
-
Sterilize according to
manufacturer's specifications.
-
When sterilization is complete
remove the handpiece and let it cool. Note: Do not
lubricate a handpiece that is hot to the touch.
-
After handpiece has cooled,
re-lubricate and attach to unit. Run for about 20 seconds to
allow excess oil to be expelled from the handpiece. Now the
handpiece is ready to use.
